Bennedict (Benn) Mathurin is a Canadian professional basketball player whose career, from Montreal North to the NBA, makes him one of the most inspiring figures of his generation. Recognized for his resilience, determination, and explosive offensive talent, Mathurin quickly established himself as a rising league star and a role model for young people across Canada.
Born on June 19, 2002 in Montreal, Bennedict grew up in a Haitian family. After the tragic death of his big brother — an event that will profoundly affect his life — he finds strength, direction and hope by following in the footsteps of his sister Jennifer, herself a basketball player, professional and coach. Inspired by his background, discipline and love for the game, Bennedict decided to devote himself fully to basketball — a choice that changed the course of his destiny.
He became the first Canadian to join the NBA Academy Latin America, where he distinguished himself by his exceptional work ethic, his explosiveness and his elite potential. His meteoric rise attracted the attention of universities across North America.
He eventually joined the University of Arizona, where he quickly became one of the best players in the country. During his second season (2021—2022), he averaged 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, leading the Wildcats to a Pac-12 title and an NCAA tournament scoring run. His performances have earned him several major awards:
• Pac-12 Player of the Year (2022)
• Second Team All-American (consensus)
• Pac-12 tournament champion
• Memorable moments, including a legendary performance against TCU at March Madness
His unique combination of power, composition, and pure talent makes him one of the most exciting prospects in his class. In 2022, Bennedict was drafted 6th overall by the Indiana Pacers, becoming the best selected Canadian player in the franchise's history. From his rookie season, he left his mark on the NBA. With 16.7 points per game (2nd among all recruits), he got:
• A place on the NBA All-Rookie First Team (2023)
• One of the Best Rookie Seasons in Pacers History
• An Essential Role in Building Indiana's Young Core
His contagious energy, offensive aggressiveness and confidence make him one of the most promising talents in the league.
Off the field, Bennedict is driven by a deep desire to give back to his community. With his sister Jennifer, he works actively with the Mathurin Family Foundation, supporting hundreds of young people in Canada and the United States through camps, workshops, educational programs, and community initiatives.
Today, Bennedict Mathurin is recognized as one of the best prospects in Canadian basketball — an athlete whose career is defined as much by his sporting excellence as by his authenticity, his humility and his commitment to the next generation.
