Egbert Gaye

Egbert Gaye was a respected journalist, writer, and community leader whose lifelong work was dedicated to amplifying the voices of Montreal's Black and Caribbean communities. Founder and editor-in-chief of Montreal Community Contact, he created one of the city's most enduring and credible media platforms for telling stories that are too often ignored by traditional media. Since its launch in 1992 and for over three decades, it has shaped the newspaper into an essential source of information, culture and connections for generations of Black Montrealers.

A passionate mentor, Egbert was deeply committed to supporting the next generation of Black journalism. It opened doors for young writers, editors, and storytellers, helping many begin meaningful careers in the media. Under his leadership, Community Contact has become much more than a newspaper: a place for training, gathering and a real driver of community empowerment.

Beyond Community Contact, Egbert's influence has extended to the entire Quebec media landscape. He was a columnist at Montreal Gazette from the 1990s to 2001 and, from 1995, served on the 26-member staff council. He was also a regular commentator on CJAD radio, where he brought reflection, clarity, and lived experience to discussions about education, systemic discrimination, and the successes of Black communities in Montreal.

Recognized as much for his human warmth as for his intelligence, Egbert had a legendary sense of humor. He enjoyed laughing, telling stories, and occasionally sharing stories, a talent that made him a popular master of ceremonies at numerous community and cultural events. Over the years, he has received numerous awards and distinctions from organizations and institutions that highlight his unwavering commitment to the development of Montreal's black and English-speaking Caribbean communities. In 2022, Montreal Community Contact was also recognized in the series Quebec Black Changemakers from CBC.

Egbert Gaye is now recognized as a visionary whose impact went far beyond journalism. Through his commitment, mentoring, and storytelling, he has helped shape a stronger, more visible, and more connected Black community, while ensuring that these voices continue to be heard.
